There are more than 100,000 children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted. These children range in age from newborn to young adults, but the average age of a child waiting to find permanency is 8 years old.

The need for teen adoptions is particularly strong as more than 20,000 youth age out of the foster care system each year without a family.

The Adoption Journey

  1. Determine your “why”: Do you know why you want to grow your family by adoption? Can you commit to love a child unconditionally? Is your entire family on board with adopting?
  2. Review the cost: Foster care adoption is often free and parents are provided financial support.
  3. Select and begin working with an adoption agency: Ticket to Dream partners with over 50 nonprofit agencies who can help you through the entire adoption process. If we don’t have a partner local to you, we can refer you to a private or public agency in your area.
  4. Begin your home study: Requirements vary state by state and the process can take 3-6 months. This is a time for your case manager to get to know you and to prepare you for adoption.
  5. Get to know your child: Once a child has been placed in your home, learn as much about them as possible. Learning about their history, their time in foster care, their birth and extended family, and their favorites will help make the permanency transition smoother for everyone.
  6. Finalize the adoption Your agency will notify you of the court proceeding which will give you permanent legal custody of the child.
