Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) is a time to celebrate the culture, history & contributions of Hispanic & Latinx communities across the United States. At Ticket to Dream, we also use this month to highlight the unique challenges faced by Hispanic foster youth & to share how we’re working with our partners to ensure these children have the resources & opportunities they need to thrive.
The Need for Support for Hispanic Foster Youth
Hispanic children represent a significant portion of the foster care population. In fact, 21% of children in foster care identify as Hispanic or Latino (Children’s Bureau, AFCARS Report, 2023). Many face barriers such as language differences, cultural identity struggles & limited access to resources that reflect their heritage.
Foster youth often move frequently, which can mean disrupted schooling & less access to stable support networks. For Hispanic foster youth, this can also include losing touch with cultural traditions, language, or community connections that are deeply tied to identity & belonging.
How Ticket to Dream Supports Hispanic Foster Youth
That’s where Ticket to Dream steps in. Together with our national network of nonprofit partners, we fund & support programs designed to meet the unique needs of Hispanic foster youth. These include:
Funding celebration of Hispanic cultural holidays or traditions
Providing diverse & culturally inclusive books, toys & ethnically appropriate hygiene items & services
Funding ESL tutoring & translation services
Recruiting & retaining Spanish speaking foster & adoptive parents & mentors
Supporting kinship placements

Through these programs, we ensure Hispanic foster youth not only have access to basics like culturally appropriate self-care items, but also opportunities that honor their culture, promote inclusion & build confidence.
